Some of you may have received an email from libhelp@keele purporting to be from the Library talking about a new library system and asking you to activate a new library account. Please DO NOT click on this - it is a scam and the link actually goes to a server in Iran which has nothing to do with Keele University, Campus Library or the Health Library. Access to Keele University eResources Off-campus

For those of you who might be away from campus during the holiday period, here is a reminder of how to access our eresources: To check or renew your books Most books should have a return date for after the Xmas holidays. If you do need to renew your loans or you want to check your account then you can do so online via the catalogue . You will need to enter your Keele computer username and password. To read an ebook We have many online ebooks including some popular reading-list texts. Just search the catalogue for the title you are looking for and click the appropriate login link. You can get more help on using ebooks from our Using eBooks etutorial . To access our databases to search for articles Use the links to the databases on your subject page: medicine , midwifery or nursing . These links take you directly to the correct login screen. You will need to enter your Keele computer username and password. You can find an example of how to do this in the vid

NHS Athens access problems

There appear to be on-going problems accessing NHS-subscribed resources using NHS Athens usernames / passwords. Access seems to be patchy and is affecting access to databases, ejournals and ebooks. We have informed both NICE (main supplier of databases) and Eduserv / Athens. Please report any problems that you are having so that we can escalate the issue.

50 Resources for Healthcare: 49. NHS Choices Health Apps Library

Here is a resource to help your patients. It is a library of mobile apps that are aimed at patients and have been reviewed by the NHS to ensure that they are clinically safe. There are official NHS apps as well as apps developed by external providers. Some are free, others need to be paid for. Many of the apps also include a rating. Wiley Online and Cochrane Library maintenance 7th Dec 2013

We have received the following notification regarding expected maintenance to Wiley Online and the Cochrane Library: Event Title: Wiley Online Library Release & The Cochrane Library Scheduled Maintenance Downtime December 2013 Date : Saturday 7th December 2013 Time:  10:00 am UK Duration: 5 hours (approximate). 50 Resources for Healthcare: 48. NICE Evidence Search

NICE Evidence Search is a healthcare specialist search engine. It will allow you to search across a wide range of accredited resources that have been approved by NICE Evidence. Thus you can be confident that the results you find will be of good quality. The results screen includes topic guides, if available, as well as your search results. You can also use the filters to focus your results more. Filters include: Area of interest Types of information Type of Clinical Query Sources Medicines & Devices Published Date Screen-shot of results from a simple search The results will often link to the full-text. This search engine does not search across journals for primary research. You can find out how to use NICE Evidence Search by watching our short video .

Update to Medicines Complete Login Screen

Medicines Complete have updated their home page and login screen. The home page now looks like this: Screen-shot of Medicines Complete home page To login you will need to click the “ Sign in ” link on the right-hand-side. 50 Resources for Healthcare: 47. Google Scholar

Google Scholar is an online search engine that limits its search to scholarly literature that is in the public domain. It searches across a wide range of subject areas. You can reach the advanced search options by clicking the down arrow on the search box. The advanced options allow you to include limits for an author, journal and date range as well as allowing you to include combinations of search terms. Google scholar is helpful for trying to find particular articles where you don’t have the complete reference and for searching for open access articles. However remember to check our journal A-Z lists to see whether we have a subscription for the full-text and which collection it will be available in. If you are looking for a job within the NHS, then try NHS Jobs . You can search for jobs using the simple text box or try the advanced search options to limit your search to particular employers, staff group or location. When you register you can set up alerts so that you are notified when new jobs are posted, apply for posts online and save your application forms.

Getting Full-text Articles

Have you been pulling your hair out trying to get to the full-text of the articles that you have found? Everything not quite as freely available on Google as you thought? Here are a few hints and tips to getting your hands on the articles you need. Know your reference You need to know as many the bibliographic details about the article as you can find. Just the article title won’t be enough, so make sure you know: Where it was published – the Journal title When it was published – the I ssue it was published in; this will include the Year it was published, also possibly the Volume and Issue N umber , sometimes also a Date . Who wrote it – the Authors You’ll need all this information for your reference list. Search our Collections Once you have the Journal title and issue you can start to look in various collections: 1. The Joseph Rowntree Foundation is a charitable organisation that is interested in society and social justice and funds research with the aim to identify issues and develop solutions impacting on poverty and inequality. They publish a range of reports relating to a wide variety of topics affecting society and specific communities. One of the categories is Health and Care. NHS Trust Athens Accounts for Students on Placement

Students who are on placement with NHS organisations can apply for an NHS Trust Athens account in order to access that organisation’s electronic resources. This is available for the duration of the placement. To apply for an account complete the online form and… Use an NHS trust email account and any computer to register OR Use an NHS-networked computer and any email address to register Note that if you already have an NHS-HE Athens account from your university then you will not be able to use your university email address to register. A quirky name but a useful resource. What are articles? How do you find them?

When we refer to articles we are usually talking about articles from a journal. This may be a print journal or an ejournal (electronic or online journal). Journals are published on a regular basis throughout the year, for example monthly or quarterly, and contain many journal articles. You may come across references to articles either from your tutors or colleagues or during your reading. We give you access to a wide range of articles via our journal collections. You’ll find all sorts of articles – published research, reporting and discussion of guidelines and best practice, as well as opinion and reflective pieces. You may need to look for journal articles on a specific topic or you might be looking for a particular article reference. 50 Resources for Healthcare: 42. Pubmed Search Strategies

This is an interesting blog where topic-specific literature search strategies are shared. The suggested searches give you Mesh headings as well as possible free-text phrases related to a specific topic the author is investigating. The tag cloud gives you an indication of the type of topics covered. The searches are pretty detailed and comprehensive. Anatomy eBooks

The anatomy section at the Health Library is, unsurprisingly, one of most popular sections and lots of the books can often be out on loan. However you can use our ebook collection of anatomy books instead. We have put together a list of some of our popular ebooks on this topic so that you can access them easily. You’ll find the Anatomy Online Reference collection on our ebooks page . Using the Self-Service Machine

If you don’t want to queue at the counter we have a self-service machine for you to use. You can take out books, renew your books, return items and pay fines (cash only). You must have your Keele / Library card with you to use it. Pedro is a physiotherapy evidence database. Here you will find randomised trials, systematic reviews and clinical practice guidelines specific to physiotherapy topics. It is free to search, no login is needed, though you may not get access to all the full-text articles it contains – check our journal collections to see whether we have the full-text.  The database is updated regularly and you can sign-up to an email list so that you can receive the latest updates in your inbox. Using Pedro will help you to focus your literature search on selected, good quality, subject specific material.
