World Osteoporosis Day is observed annually on 20 October , and launches a year-long campaign dedicated to raising global awareness of the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease. Organized by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) every year, World Osteoporosis Day involves campaigns by national osteoporosis patient societies from around the world with activities in over 90 countries. The Library has now developed a joint area with the Main Campus Library to host useful resources to improve your information skills including help with literature searching, current awareness, evaluating information and guides to finding journals and books. All new undergraduates now be able to view the Library area as a course in their MyWebCT page. Changes to enrollment procedures may have affected people who were manually enrolled over the last two years. If you have a problem, please contact Susan Smith (s.w.smith@lib.keele.ac.uk) to regain access to these useful library links and resources.

Over the summer months we have been increasing the number of books available in an electronic format, including a new selection of books hosted on Dawsonera . All locally purchased e-books have now been added to the library catalogue . Look out for the computer icon and click on the web address to read the book online. With the exception of the NetLibrary collection (Keele only - look for netlibrary in the web address), most books should be available by logging in via a Keele or local NHS Athens account. Additional nationally purchased items accessible to NHS Athens users can be searched through the NLH e-books page and the local NHS purchased book the Handbook of Practice Management . These items have not been added to the Library catalogue. For further information on e-books, please visit our online guide .

We understand that the Health Library is not always the easiest place to visit and many people are trying to fit study around work, shifts and family life. To reflect this, there has been an expansion to the collection of online books. These titles can be viewed at home by logging in using either your Keele or NHS Athens account. This latest collection of a further 216 books has now been added to MyiLibrary , where titles can be browsed by subject, or using an author or title search. The other great advantage of online books is the ability to search the book content itself, either within an individual text or across the full MyiLibrary collection. For a quick overview on the use of e-books, please visit the online library guide . NHS Athens account holders can also use the NHS Evidence e-book gateway to search this collection of books inconjunction with e-books purchased nationally through the Core Content. Following a decision by Library Advisory Group, from 1 August 2009 members of the University requesting Inter-Library Loans from the British Library will be required to pay the full cost of these requests. There is no change is service for NHS employees.

Keele access to the Netskills training resources will end 17th May. Netskills is a package of downloadable learning materials for complete courses from basic use of the Internet, basic programming skills to e-learning techniques and working with social networking. All courses can be fully downloaded as ZIP files until this date.

Many Keele staff and students may have noticed the @ Keele logo appearing on many of their favourite information resources. Where ever you see this symbol, it means that you can click on it to check for the resources online availability. The presence of the symbol itself doesn't mean that it will be available electronically. It has now been added to many of the publishing platforms, Keele databases, Google Scholar, Scirus and now the Library catalogue. Click here to visit the full Keele A-Z holdings. Please note that this will search for journal titles not journal content. The databases are the best tool to used for literature searching. NHS can access Keele journals under a walk in licence whilst using the Health Library IT Suite. Please note that due to copyright restrictions, library staff can not provide any copies of Keele articles to NHS staff directly.

You can now access subscribed institutional resources at point of search from Google Scholar . To view local resources: - Select Scholar Preferences - Under Library links search for Keele or UHNS - Tick appropriate box - Save preferences Now when you search Google Scholar on that computer, look out for the Health Library print, UHNS full-text and fulltext@Keele to check for local holdings. You may need to be logged in via the appropriate Athens account to view relevant articles. Please note that UHNS holdings are also applicable to all holders of Athens accounts from NHS North Staffordshire, NHS Stoke and the Combined Healthcare Trust. Not all NHS resources have yet been added, please check the Journals A-Z for full list.

Zetoc table of contents and citation checker package is currently down until further notice. The problem is affecting all Mimas resources and is currently under investigation. This disrupts access both to Keele and NHS Athens users.

The End of Life Care Journal is the latest addition to the Keele e-journal collection. This has been purchased to support the new palliative care course as well as the relevant sections of the current nursing curriculum. This title has not yet been added to the Keele A-Z list , but can be accessed from the publishers homepage using a Keele http://www.keele.ac.uk/depts/li/eir/athens.htm.

A new series of information skills training sessions is starting at the Keele Main Campus Library. The courses are primarily aimed at postgraduate and research students, but undergraduates are free to attend. Topics covered include Reference Manager, copyright and avoiding plagiarism, effective search strategies and searching Web of Knowledge. Click here for further information and online booking. Please be aware that it is Keele policy that all outstanding library fines are cleared prior to the start of the new academic year on 29th September. No new items can be issues or renewed until all monies owing have been paid. Note that from the week beginning 8th September if you wish to renew any items, they should be brought back to the library in person. The change over from vacation time to term time on the library issue system requires that library staff must manually return and re-issue books in order to renew them. As all books borrowed by Keele students are due either on the 29th or 30th September, it may be advisable to bring all renewals in prior to these dates to avoid lengthy queues.

Members of the Health Faculty will be pleased to know that the subscription to Anatomy.TV will be retained for at least the next year. Anatomy.TV is an online 3D interactive anatomy model with study guide, self testing and specialist sections. This package is available to holders of Keele Athens accounts only.

The Health Library will be resuming NHS literature searching training courses from the start of May, details and online booking available on the Health Library website . This course is now available to all Keele nursing and medical students, and supporting staff. Additional help sessions are also available for all Keele health faculty staff and students using the Ebsco database interface. Details on courses offered are on the Health Library website . Please contact the Library for further details on training in the workplace or one to one refresher sessions.

From the 8th January, there have been some changes to e-journals subscriptions available through Science Direct. Discrepancies in the Library A-Z journal listings may exist temporarily - automatic updating will occur only once the first issue of the journal has been published.
