Listen to the patient - read about patient experiences from our Patient Voices collection

 We have created a collection of books written by people living with a range of medical and health conditions. They detail their experiences both of their condition and how they deal with the healthcare system. Topics include; mental health dementia cancer stroke eating disorders parenthood physical disability learning disability and many more You can find the Patient Voices collection in the Library rotunda (at the end of the print journals shelving), or browse the collection online via Library Search .

Updates to the Health Library Current Awareness Service

 I have updated the Current Awareness pages on the Health Library website. These are now simpler and direct you to the current awareness services produced by the Library: Current Awareness Service (netvibes) Bulletins produced by the NHS Outreach Service Covid-19 Evidence Bulletins I am also in the process of updating the specialty pages within the Current Awareness Service (netvibes) to include the latest feeds of more of our subscribed journals. Check our Information Skills for Health blog for more up-coming information (in March) regarding our specialty pages.

How did the Library help in 2020?

 Staff at the Health Library have been working hard this year to deliver our services - in whatever format we can. This year we: Delivered 302 training sessions Completed 124 literature searches Supported 436 new OpenAthens accounts Supplied 117 inter-library loan requests Make sure you're making the most of your membership of the library and ask about how we can support you.

Delays in book transfers due to covid restrictions

 Unfortunately there may be some delays transferring books between sites or making books available due to quarantining. These services are impacted by the covid restrictions required to ensure everyone is safe. Apologies for any inconvenience. Please feel free to contact the library prior to your visit, if you want to check that a book is available to be picked up.

CASP online critical appraisal courses

 CASP - the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme - have developed a range of online courses to help you to get to grips with critical appraisal . Courses include: Introduction to critical appraisal & CASP Introduction to the critical appraisal of randomised controlled trials How to use a CASP RCT checklist Making sense of results: measures of effectiveness in RCTs RCT module bundle The courses require payment and cost varies between £6 and £45 (at time of writing). Children’s Mental Health Week 1st – 7th February 2021

  Around three children in every primary school class has a mental health problem, and many more struggle with challenges from bullying to bereavement. Place2Be launched their first ever Children’s Mental Health Week in 2015, to shine a spotlight on the importance of children and young people’s mental health. Now in its seventh year, they hope to encourage more people than ever to get involved and spread the word. 2021’s campaign theme is “Express Yourself”. Expressing yourself is about finding ways to share feelings, thoughts, or ideas, through creativity. This could be through art, music, writing and poetry, dance and drama, photography and film, and doing activities that make you feel good. Therefore it is important to remember that being able to express yourself, doesn’t mean you’re the best at something, but instead is about showing who you are and how you see the world in a way that makes you feel positive about yourself.
