Need help with Nursing Revalidation?

The Health Library is here to support nurses completing their revalidation – whether it’s a quiet spot to gather your thoughts or help finding online articles, there is lots that we can do for you. Royal Marsden Manual Online available for SSoTP and UHNM staff

Both SSoTP and UHNM staff can access the Royal Marsden Manual Online via their Athens username / password. Encountered an unusual medical case? Don't forget that you can share your findings in BMJ Case Reports

Want to share an unusual clinical case, complication or diagnosis? Then you can submit your own BMJ Case Report. BMJ Case Reports  are available to UHNM staff. The Health Library subscription includes the opportunity not only for you to access full-text of published content but also for you to submit your own cases. You can find more information on  our BMJ Case Reports support page .

Students on Placement or Electives (Nursing & Midwifery) - no change to library loan rules

If you are embarking on a placement or elective in November / December / January: You are welcome to continue to loan items from the library, but please be aware that normal loan periods will still apply. Items may be requested by another user and recalled. Late return of requested items will still incur fines. Automatic renewals will run as normal, but if you wish to try to avoid having an item potentially due for return at a time when you really cannot come in, you can attempt to renew your books early via your account on Library Search.

Foodbank Collection at the Health Library

We are holding a Foodbank Collection appeal at the Health Library, between November and Christmas.  If you would like to make a donation, there is a display and a basket in the Health Library to deposit your item(s). Deposit items at the display in the library The items collected will be donated to the Newcastle-Staffs Foodbank, which is a part of the Trussell Trust. The Foodbank does amazing work, providing 3 days’ nutritionally balanced emergency food and support to local people who are referred to them in crisis. COPD Awareness Month November 2017

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the name for a group of lung conditions that cause breathing difficulties. It includes: emphysema – damage to the air sacs in the lungs and chronic bronchitis – long-term inflammation of the airways. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is the 3 rd leading cause of death in the United States. The disease kills more than 120,000 Americans each year—that’s 1 death every 4 minutes—and causes serious, long-term disability. The number of people with COPD is increasing. More than 12 million people are diagnosed with COPD and an additional 12 million likely have the disease and don’t even know it. Therefore this November, the title of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s national awareness and education campaign is COPD Learn More Breathe Better.
