Automated Renewals Service available

You can now renew your library loans via an automated telephone service. Call the renewals number 01782 733230. Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Use either your Keele card number or your NHS library barcode number; you’ll need to add a # at the end. You can list your loans, renew them, as well as learn of any other information about your library account.

App for Searching Ebsco Databases

Since we now have wifi for Keele users at the Health Library I thought that you might be interested in the Ebscohost app which allows you to search our main Keele-based healthcare databases such as Medline and Cinahl. Thanks to a student for bringing this to my attention. I have been able to set this up for an Android device, so I’m guessing that the iphone app will be very similar. To get instructions and links relevant for the app: Go to your subject page on the Health Library website , eg Nursing Databases, Midwifery Databases or Medical Databases Click the link for the Ebsco database you usually use eg Medline or Cinahl (note that it doesn’t matter which and the app allows you to search multiple databases) Login using the Shibboleth login option if prompted, entering your Keele University computer username and password when needed. Wifi now available at the Health Library

Keele university wifi is now available to at the Health Library. This is delivered in association with UHNS IT. Due to security restrictions imposed by the UHNS IT department you will not be able to automatically pick up the network. You need to manually set up a hidden wireless network. Please contact the CEC IT department for more help. The team is based in room SF03 on the second floor of the Clinical Education Centre. You can go on a virtual tour around the Health Library by having a look at our interactive map. It tells you what you need to know to visit us and gives you an idea of how everything is laid out, so that you feel a bit more orientated when you arrive. Book Sale Coming Soon

The Health Library Book Sale will begin on Monday 30th September.  Hundreds of newly discarded medical and nursing textbooks will be on sale at bargain prices. First come, first served! Books can be paid by for cash or credit/debit card.  Check our opening times and come down to pick up a bargain.       .

Myths & Facts about NHS Athens username and password

We get some strange comments about NHS Athens username / password so here is a little myth-busting. Myth – I don’t need an NHS Athens username / password as everything is free on the Internet. Fact – sadly everything isn’t freely available. Many publishers charge for access to the fulltext of their articles. You can use your NHS Athens username / password to access online journal articles. You can also use your Athens username and password to access ebooks and databases. Myth – You can access everything you need with an NHS Athens username / password. Fact – unfortunately this isn’t true. You can access resources that we have purchased for you. This includes ebooks, ejournals and articles as well as databases. Like everyone else we have to work within a budget. Also, some publishers are not Athens compliant and we have to give you alternative routes to these resources. Electives (Midwifery) - no change in library loan rules.

If you are embarking on an elective in the next few weeks, to ensure you do not incur any fines it is advisable to return your books to the library before starting your placement. Students are welcome to continue to borrow items, but please be aware that normal requirements to renew items, and the possibility that items will be recalled or fines incurred for late return/renewal, will still apply.

NHS Local has an absolute plethora of information services to help the general public, patients and healthcare staff. Helping the General Public: There is a section to help us all to try and be healthier by tackling public health concerns such as alcohol, eating well, exercise, sexual health and smoking a well as helping pregnant women with advice about maternity services. Supporting Patients: Patients can use this website to find particular local services and compare them as well as provide feedback of their own experiences. There is a Find service which allows patients to find local services and support groups in their area. Patients can also get help in managing their condition with advice and tools. NHS Staff Development The website also includes a link to the NHS Local Learning website . The Care Quality Commission is an organisation that monitors the standards of health care providers in the UK. On their website you can find their reports based on the services delivered by a range of providers including hospitals, GP services, care homes, dentists as well as specialist services.
