New Training Dates for Health Library Courses – April to June 2019

We’ve released new training dates for our training programme. Have a look at the training opportunities available at the Health Library this April, May and June. We can help you to develop your skills so that you can find the evidence to support decision-making and patient care. Our courses include opportunities to: Get help finding the right information via the Internet Learn how to conduct a literature search and use our databases to get information quickly Find high-level good quality systematic reviews and evidence summaries using the Cochrane Library and similar resources Start to develop your critical appraisal skills Get to grips with Refworks (Keele only) Our courses are free, provide lots of hands-on opportunities and are usually completed in 1 to 2 hours. Students on Electives or placement (Medicine, Nursing or Midwifery) - no change to library loan rules

If you are embarking on an elective or placement during April or in May / June: You are welcome to continue to loan items from the library, but please be aware that normal loan periods will still apply. Items may be requested by another user and thus need to be returned. Late return of requested items will still incur fines. Automatic renewals will run as normal, but if you wish to try to avoid having an item potentially due for return at a time when you really cannot come in, you can attempt to renew your books early via your account on Library Search.

Crisp bag recycling scheme in the Health Library

Paige recycling her crisp packet Library apprentice Paige Simcoe launched a new recycling scheme in the Health Library yesterday. The Crisp Packet Recycling Scheme which is part of the first national crisp packet recycling scheme in the UK is run by Walkers working in partnership with Terracycle. Please put you empty crisp packets in the special bins located in the Health Library. Where are the recycling bins? Currently there are two recycling bins – one by the seating area in the rotunda close to the newspapers and one by the water cooler next to the IT suite  Crisp recycling bin What type of bags can be recycled? As part of your NMC Revalidation you may be asked to provide evidence of reflection on practice and professional reading, as well as keeping up-to-date. The Health Library is here to support you. Bookshelves at the Health Library At the Library Joining the Library allows you to use our facilities, services and resources. Complete our application form and bring it, along with your NHS ID badge, to the counter so that we can set you up as a member. You can use our comfortable study areas and IT suite if you need somewhere quiet to work on your revalidation. Using Resources You can access a wealth of resources, either in print at the library or online via your NHS OpenAthens username . You’ll be able to find good quality, healthcare-specific information to provide evidence for your practice and support your professional reading. Take a timeout at our Mindfulness table

We’ve set up some mindfulness activities on a table in the rotunda, at the Health Library. So if you want to take a timeout for a few minutes just pop along. UHNM Staff can access a range of eBook collections

You can access our ebooks using your NHS openathens username via: Library Search Use the library catalogue Library Search to look for ebook titles purchased by the Library Service. You’ll find e-versions of many of our popular titles. Clinical Key eBooks Clinical key is available to all UHNM staff via your openathens username. It includes a collection of ebooks. The ebook texts can also be included in any searches you complete in Clinical Key. Oxford Handbook Collection We have purchased a number of Oxford Handbooks ebooks for UHNM staff, making the content easily accessible while you are on the go. eBooks allow you to access information 24/7 and are portable via your IT devices. Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month 1st – 31st March 2019

About 7,300 women are diagnosed each year in the UK 4,100 women lose their lives each year – that’s 11 women every day A woman in the UK has a one in 50 chance of being diagnosed with ovarian cancer in her lifetime In 2019, the Target Ovarian Cancer Organisation are running the “TAKE OVAR” campaign in order to raise awareness, fund research and save lives this March. According to the organisation, the earlier a woman is diagnosed with ovarian cancer the more likely she will respond to treatment. But most women are diagnosed once the disease has already spread, and one in five is diagnosed too late for any treatment at all. Without a serious boost in awareness, women will continue to be diagnosed too late. The team work to raise the profile of ovarian cancer, spread the word about the symptoms, and train GPs in early diagnosis.
