The App of the month for December is NICE Guidelines. NICE provide evidence-based  guidance and advice for a wide range of conditions, diseases and public health issues. You can access the NICE guidelines via your mobile device. Download the app and you will be able to refer to any guideline off-line – helpful in meetings or discussing the latest evidence with patients. If you can’t get into the library or find that you have to wait for a popular text, why not try our ebooks? Our ebook collections are accessible online via the Internet and can be accessed 24/7. You can easily search them for the information you need and can often add your own notes. To find an ebook search the catalogue and click the relevant link to login. You will need either your NHS Athens username / password or your Keele computer username / password. Of course there is a lot of information available via the Internet – perhaps too much? Is it good quality? If you feel a little overwhelmed we can start you off with a few good quality resources. Our Finding Information on the Internet etutorial will give you a few pointers to look out for and lists a number of resources that it is always worth checking. Our Literature Searching Sites web page gives you a pretty comprehensive list of some good quality information sources that might be useful during your studies and career. Whether you are searching for articles, trying to find reviews or looking for guidelines this is a good place to start.

We have been made aware that some users have encountered errors when self-registering with NHS Athens via the online form . It would appear that the error is linked to the optional box “I agree to be contacted occasionally by NICE for surveys and research to improve NICE products”. Databases hold bibliographic information about articles related to particular topics. They offer you a number of search tools to help you to find articles that match the topic you are looking for. We subscribe to a number of health-specific databases that can help you to focus your search and find the information you need effectively. Getting to grips with these resources can take a bit of time but it is worth it in the end. 19th November 2014 Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder or COPD, is a term that encompasses a number of differing conditions such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis.  It is one of the most common respiratory diseases and at present is thought there are as many as three million people living with the disease in the UK. 14th November 2014 Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas fails to produce insulin or the body has trouble processing the insulin the pancreas does produce.  Whilst the disease can be managed those that suffer from diabetes are at increased risk of developing a number of serious health issues.  It is estimated that the number of people living with diabetes will rise to 535 million. The mission of the International Diabetes Federation is to promote diabetes care, prevention and the development of a cure.  World Diabetes Day is celebrated every year on the 14 th November.  It brings together millions of people across the world in order to promote the core aims of the International Diabetes Federation and raise awareness. Here is our App of the Month for November. Do you know that you can access your library account and search for books using your mobile devices? It is a bit complicated – you start with the Keele University app which has a section for the libraries. This will then also direct you to the Library Anywhere app and the Catalogue. Remember to renew your books on time. It’s easy to do. You can renew any items you have by: bringing the items and your Library Card to the counter bringing just your Library Card to the counter telephoning us - at the Health Library, have your Library Card with you, during opening hours telephoning us - using the automated service, have your Library Card with you, available outside opening hours online - login to view your Library Account and renew your items You can renew your items as many times as you like, as long as no one else has requested it. If someone else has requested an item you have borrowed you need to return it to the library by the due date. Renew on time: avoid a fine.

Don’t forget that you can send us any comments you have about the Health Library via the Comments Box. This has now been re-located to the centre of the rotunda, on the enquiries desk, so you can find it easily. Just complete the form and pop it in the box. It is always helpful to us if you include a date for the comment and your contact details, but if you prefer to remain anonymous then that is OK too.

You can now use your Keele card to pay for library fines using the self-service unit located in the photocopier room. Simply insert your card and follow the on-screen instructions. To top up your Keele card use the card loader machines also located in the photocopier room or go online .

The Health Library is offering a new service to our busy NHS members – you can now request copies of journal articles available in our print journal collection. We will photocopy the articles and send them out to you. You can check our print journal collection via the NHS My Journals A-Z list . For more information please view our web page here .

Due to a serious cabling problem, there are currently no network services to the Health Library. This means that there is no wi-fi, no printing, no photocopying, and the student PCs aren't working. The Library is currently working off-line, so limited issue and return facilities are available via the Library counter only. The catalogue remains available externally and renewals may be done online. We are awaiting word on when the problem will be fixed. Our apologies for any inconvenience.

Over the coming year we will be telling you about a number of apps that can help you to make the most of the resources we have on offer via mobile / tablet devices. Let’s start with one of your essential resources: the British National Formulary (BNF). You can access the BNF and BNF for children on your mobile phone or tablet. You can download the app for free but will need your NHS Athens username / password during the registration process. The BNF and BNFc apps allow you to: Browse and search drug reference information Access details of medicines including their uses, cautions, contra-indications, side-effects and doses Keep up-to-date with the latest prescribing information Access information without access to a network connection Bookmark favourite pages We have a short guide to the BNF app to help you get started. 21 st September 2014 Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. As yet there is no known cure and its symptoms eventually lead to death. At this present time there are approximately 2.8 million people living with this life changing disease globally. September 2014 marks the third World Alzheimer’s Month and on 21st September it is World Alzheimer’s Day.
