Do you need healthcare statistics?

You can find links to all sorts of statistical collections on our Statistics subject links page ; including: Local statistics for Newcastle Under Lyme, Stoke on Trent and Staffordshire Moorlands Office of National Statistics NHS Information Centre as well as European and World information. You can also sign-up for email alerts so that you are informed about the latest release of data and reports, where providers make this available via a news feed. Get the latest Commissioning Information

I have updated our Commissioning Subject links page with resources where you can find information about the latest NHS reforms as well as find support for commissioning activities. You can keep up-to-date with the latest news about commissioning by signing up to our Current Awareness page. You can sign-up to receive updates in your email inbox. 50 Resources for Healthcare: 5. Get information to support patients - try Patient UK

You can find good quality, evidence-based information to help your patients on the Patient UK website. You can download leaflets about conditions and medications aimed at patients as well as access a number of reference articles aimed at medical professionals. There are also blogs, patient stories and discussion forums for patients. Healthcare students should check out the education section ; i ncluded here are OSCEs and MCQs for a range of conditions to help you with your revision. Keep up-to-date with Child Health News

We have a new current awareness page to keep you up-to-date with the latest published research in paediatrics and child health. Oxford Handbooks Online

Our list of Oxford Handbooks available online has been updated to include the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Haematology. You can see the list of titles online and link to them via our ebooks webpage . You will need your NHS Athens username / password or your Keele computer username / password to read the full-text. For more help on how to access ebooks check out our ebooks etutorial .

Terminated Online Journal Titles

This year we have ended our subscriptions to the following online journals for NHS users: American Journal of Clinical Nutrition Journal of Medical Screening Physiological Measurement Radiology Unfortunately we do not retain perpetual access to previously subscribed content, as such these titles have been removed from the A-Z journals list. Journal subscriptions to be terminated are identified by a number of factors including usage and cost. If you have any concerns about our NHS journal coverage please contact the NHS Lead Librarian . All our available titles can be accessed via the NHS A-Z Journals list – login using your Athens username and password to view the full list. 

50 Resources for Healthcare: 4. Search for Systematic Reviews via the Cochrane Library

You can find good quality information, including systematic reviews across a wide range of conditions, diseases and treatments via the Cochrane Library . The Cochrane Review groups   perform comprehensive, systematic literature searches to identify and qualify the published research. This is then reviewed to develop a summary of the best good quality literature. You can search the Cochrane Library using the simple text box or perform more complicated searches using subject headings, search limits and the search manager to combine searches. We have a step by step guide to get you started and you can find more help including video tutorials on the Cochrane website. NHS Access to the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery

The Health Library has now subscribed to the online journal titles: Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery – American Volume Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery – British Volume These are available via the Ovid database to all our NHS Athens users. Please use our journals page to access our full A-Z list of journal titles.  Note that the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery – British Volume is changing its name this year to The Bone & Joint Journal. This will be reflected in our lists as soon as the link to Ovid is available.

More Journals now available online for NHS users

I have now set up some more of our new online journal titles. The following titles are now available via Oxford Journals, using your NHS Athens username and password: British Journal of Anaesthesia Family Practice International journal of Epidemiology Journal of infectious diseases Rheumatology & supplements These titles can be accessed by UHNS NHS Athens users. Resources for NHS Staffordshire Hospices Staff

The online resources available on the NHS My Journals A-Z list for NHS Staffordshire Hospices staff have been updated to remove any terminated subscriptions and add in appropriate resources from the Health Library. This applies only to NHS staff who are registered with the NHS Staffordshire Hospices Athens organisation. You can access the NHS My Journals A-Z list via our journals webpage .

NICE is the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence. It is a government agency responsible for publishing guidelines relating to health and social care in the UK to ensure that professionals have access to authoritative, evidence-based guidance. NICE provides guidance on a range of conditions and diseases, treatments, procedures and devices as well as support for public health and NHS commissioning. The guidelines may be available in a range of formats including brief summaries, patient-focused guidance, as well as the full and comprehensives guideline including the search strategy and full bibliography. You can browse through the various options or use the simple search facility to find guidelines relevant to your search topic. You can then use the filter options to narrow your search. You can also access NICE guidelines on the go via the mobile app .

Clinical Effectiveness Bulletin no. 71 December 2012

You can find out about the latest government initiatives and policies related to public health, social care and the NHS via the Department of Health website . You can also access a range of reports that they publish and can sign up to bulletins to keep yourself up-to-date with their news releases. Browse: Bulletins   NHSPolicies   Reportsand publications They have an A-Z list of popular topics from Ageing Well to Information Policy to Urgent and Emergency Care where you can find a range of topic-specific documents and news items. 50 Resources for Healthcare: 1. Get the latest health library news

Over the next year I’m going to tell you about different resources that are available to help you to find health-related information to support your studies and work. I’m aiming for 1 item per week so we should be done just before Christmas. If I miss a week do let me know. So the first resource is the Health Library blog – you’re reading it now. We use the blog to tell you all about the latest news at the library. Here you can find out about any changes to our facilities and services such as changes to opening times, printing procedures, expected maintenance and so on. We also let you know about any new resources that we purchase, such as books, journals and databases, and promote our current resources. There are lots of extra features on the blog.
