Develop your information skills and learn how to complete a literature search – our Information Skills etutorials can help Our Information Skills etutorials are short, interactive tutorials that help you to develop the skills you need to find information effectively. Start with an Introduction to Literature Searching – complete the starter search plan for your project or assignment. Then go on and complete more etutorials to improve your search skills . You can complete and save our etutorial reflection document to keep a record for your eportfolio. Here is a quick taster of the skills you can develop:

If you are embarking on an elective in May and June: You are welcome to continue to loan items from the library, but please be aware that normal loan periods will still apply. Items may be requested by another user and recalled.  Late return of requested items will still incur fines. Automatic renewals will run as normal, but if you wish to try to avoid having an item potentially due for return at a time when you really cannot come in, you can attempt to renew your books early via you account on Library Search.

The Health Library will be closed Monday 1st May 2017 for the Bank Holiday. You can still access online resources via our website .

We are currently updating our Current Awareness Bulletins to include the latest ejournals that we subscribe to. You can sign-up to receive a current awareness bulletin which will include the table of contents and a selection of articles from ejournals based on a particular topic. You can view a list of bulletins available, along with the ejournals included via our Current Awareness Service dashboard page . If you are not sure how to find or use our online resources, then try our Getting Started etutorials . You’ll learn how to get access, how to search and how to access full-text. eTutorials are available for our most popular online resources, both Keele and NHS. Most are very short; you can jump to the section you need and most include either step-by-step instructions or video demonstrations. All our etutorials allow you to download and save our etutorial reflection document which you can add to your portfolio.

Automatic renewals will run as normal, but if you wish to try to avoid having an item potentially due for return at a time when you really cannot come in, you can attempt to renew your books early via you account on Library Search. All items must be returned and any outstanding fines paid before you graduate.

We support NHS staff by providing access to good quality, evidence-based information. Last quarter 303 new Athens users registered to access our resources. Learn more about the #amilliondecisions campaign.

Last quarter we helped to support NHS staff make evidence-based decisions by completing 35 literature searches on their behalf. Learn more about the #amilliondecisions campaign.

The Health Library can help you in many different ways. Here is an example from our NHS Outreach Service. Research: One of our Outreach Librarians, Clare,  carried out literature a search on the topic of group psychological interventions alongside clients with long term physical health conditions. North Staffs Combined Healthcare has patients with a variety of conditions including medically unexplained symptoms, epilepsy, and chronic pain. A systematic search was carried out across all relevant databases and a report document was prepared which included all references, listed any systematic reviews separately, and provided links to full text using NHS Athens. Purpose:  To provide information for an evidence base of knowledge which may be used to improve service delivery and patient care in the future. The NHS A-Z Journals list has had a face-lift and now has a more spacious, uncluttered interface. You can still search by journal title and the search options remain the same, however the presentation is clearer. Please note that the list now has a new URL or web address, you will need to update your bookmarks. You can always link to the journal list from the Journals page on the Health Library website .

NHS staff in the community can sign up for bulletins. Recent journal articles and reports, news, updated guidelines, and systematic reviews are included in the bulletins we produce. They are designed to give you a concise overview of some of the newly available literature in a range of practice areas. This aims to draw attention to key documents, guidance and evidence-based reviews on clinical effectiveness. How can we help support you to make decisions? To base your decisions on the available evidence, invariably some sort of search for the current evidence or literature is needed. You get your list of results and what happens – there may be some items that you are unable to access in full text from the NHS electronic resources. Our document supply service can help you get access to this crucial information: Inter-library loans   If it is an item that the library does not hold at all in electronic or print format, we can search for the item in other libraries which we have an inter-lending arrangement with. We can then request a copy to be sent to us and forward it on to you or make available for collection from the library. To request an article or book via inter-library loan the request forms can easily be found on the Health library website in the Find a Form section . There is a charge per item for this service. Get Access: Register for an NHS Athens username / password so that you can access our databases and full-text resources. We manage Athens access locally and help you to maintain your username. Find the Evidence You can access bibliographic databases, clinical search engines, point of care tools, full-text ejournals and ebooks to help you to identify the best evidence. Health Library training courses are presented by qualified librarians, usually to small groups and offer you plenty of time for hands-on practice. We have had a few changes this year regarding our NHS journal subscriptions as detailed below: Main packages: Ovid Journals – 7 subscriptions have been terminated, while 46 have been renewed. Oxford Journals – the subscription to the Oxford Medical Collection has been terminated, however we have retained access to 10 of the most used titles. Clinical Key – this subscription has been retained for UHNM staff, and includes access to over 600 journal titles Individual Titles: Nine (9) individual titles have been terminated, while 34 have been renewed. Databases: Databases allow you to search bibliographic information as well as provide access to some full-text articles.
