Health Library support for foundation year doctors at UHNM

Welcome to all the foundation year doctors to UHNM, who have started this year. I hope that you are settling in and have found your feet.

Here is a reminder of how the Health Library can support you in your work and in your career going forward.

Join the Library

At UHNM you have access to 2 libraries:

  • Health Library for North Staffordshire - based in the Clinical Education Centre (CEC) on the Royal Stoke site.
  • Health Library at County - based in the post-graduate medical centre on the County Hospital (Stafford) site.

Your library membership covers both sites. You will need to complete a membership form to join - this is available from our website.

Your membership allows you to borrow from our book collections as well as access a range of other services.

Register for NHS OpenAthens Username

An NHS OpenAthens username will give you access to the NHS online resources that we subscribe to for UHNM. It is important that you register for an account so that you can access ebooks, journals, databases and other tools. You register by completing an online form - go to our OpenAthens page for more information or complete our etutorial to learn more about NHS OpenAthens.

Access Online Resources

We have a wealth of online resources that you can access to support your work. As well as ebook collections, journals and major healthcare databases, you can also access clinical decision support tools such as BMJ Best Practice and Clinical Key.

You'll find a full list of resources on our NHS Resources web page or take a look at our etutorial Finding NHS Resources for a brief overview of everything that it available.

Get Journal Articles

You'll need to be checking for the latest research in your specialty during your career. You can check our A-Z list of journals to find out if we subscribe to the full-text of the journal articles you need. However if something is not covered by our subscription you can request an inter-library loan and we will try to get you a copy from another library.

Request a Literature Search

If you are struggling to find the information you need or simply don't have the time, we can run a search for you. Our librarian team have knowledge of the key healthcare resources and how to use them effectively to find the latest information. You can request a literature search online.

Learn More

We have a range of learning opportunities that you can take advantage of to learn more about the Health Library, our resources and to help you to develop your own digital and information skills. Currently these are mostly online in the form of etutorials but we also include links to videos and guides.
