50 Resources for Healthcare: 35. West Midlands Public Health Observatory

The West Midlands Public Health Observatory (WMPHO) can provide you with lots of information and data about public health issues. You can find links to reports, charts and data for a wide range of topics from alcohol issues, to climate change and health, long term mortality trends, older people’s health issues and social care with many more in-between. You can also view local profiles across a range of measurements, where the data can be broken down by NHS trust or geographical area. Please note that during 2013 the public health observatories will be incorporated into Public Health England's Knowledge and Intelligence Team (West Midlands).

50 Resources for Healthcare: 34. Occupational Therapy CATS

If you work in Occupational Therapy you might want to check out the Occupational Therapy Critically Appraised Topics (OT CATs). A CAT is a short summary of the evidence around a particular topic. It usually looks at a number of studies related to the same problem or clinical question in order to try to identify an answer to the query. On this site you can find CATS related to a number of occupational therapy based specific topics. The CAT will include a detailed description of the problem being investigated, the search strategy used, a list of the references identified, a summary of the evidence found as well as a bottom-line conclusion.

Problems with Royal Society of Medicine eJournals (NHS users)

The ejournal titles that we subscribe to and are published by the Royal Society of Medicine are being moved to the SAGE Journals platform. Unfortunately SAGE are having some problems providing like-for-like access and this is affecting our ability to access these titles. This involves 3 titles: Clinical Risk, Health Services Management Research and the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine. At the moment many of the articles seemed to be freely available and we do have access to some holdings via other collections and in print. We have reported the problems and hope that the publishers can resolve this issue soon. You can report any problems you experience with our eresources using our technical support form . Our journals page will show you the latest errors and fixes that we are encountering with our journals access. To access our journals collections go to the journals page on our website.

Do you need access to NHS-subscribed journals and databases?

If you work for one our NHS partner organisations you can sign-up for an NHS Athens username and password. This will give you access to the many online ejournals and databases that we subscribe to on your behalf. You don’t have to be on a course to sign-up; you can use the resources to support: continuing professional development, evidence-based medicine and patient care. You will find all the information to help you to register on our Athens page . We also have an etutorial that will explain what Athens is and will take you through the registration process step-by-step.

Journal access errors fixed

We have been experiencing a number of problems with access to a small number of our journal titles. Several of these have now been resolved. Please check our journals page for a list of fixed and outstanding issues. If you experience any problems accessing our electronic resources please report them to the eResources Librarian or use our technical support form .

UHNS staff looking for the latest Medical Bedside Clinical Guidelines?

The new edition (2013/14) of the Medical Guidelines for general adult medicine are now available on the staff intranet. Just go to Clinicians/Clinical Guidance/Clinical Guidelines and choose Medical from the selection of guidelines. This year, they are no print copies available in the Library so please refer to the intranet to access this useful resource. You''ll also find the latest guidelines for a number of other areas too including Emergency Medicine, Obstetric and Surgical.

50 Resources for Healthcare: 33. CEBM – Centre for Evidence Based Medicine

The Centre for Evidence Based Medicine offers a range of courses and tutorials to help clinicians to develop the skills to practice evidence-based medicine. It also makes available a range of tools, presentations and publications to support practitioners and the teaching of EBM. You can find a number of tools to help you with the step-by-step process: Using PICO to help you to develop a clinical question Where to look for evidence Critical Appraisal tools and worksheets Application of the results to your own situation CEBM also have a youtube channel .which includes videos of presentations and tutorials. Check out this PICO video . We also have a number of etutorials to get you started with the basics.

New printers in the IT suite

Two new printers have been installed in the IT suite at the Clinical Education Centre. Please be aware: Both printers are colour printers – you no longer need to select which printer you need Printing charges for black / white is now 4p per page You can now print double-sided – check the options in the printer properties before sending the print Note that the default option is to print in colour – you will need to select black/white in the printer properties before sending the print Printing charges for colour is still 14p per page You release your print to the printer from the 3 release stations as before. Please check the costs are what you expect before you do.

Error accessing Journal titles from Medline with FullText now fixed

The error we experienced accessing volumes and issues from the journal pages in Medline with full-text has now been resolved. You should now be able to click the year on the journal page in order to drop-down the list of issues available. 50 Resources for Healthcare: 32. Pubmed

Pubmed is a freely available, online, searchable, bibliographic database, which includes data from Medline. You can use it to complement and supplement your literature searching. You use the main text box to enter your simple free-text search terms or the more sophisticated advanced search options to combine searches and apply limits. The results list will often include links to freely available article pdfs, though you will need to check on our journal lists for access to most journal titles. The search results list can be filtered, emailed or exported. If you sign-up and create a free login you can also save your searches and set up alerts. Pubmed also has a citation matcher which is really useful when you are trying to track-down a reference where you have only part of the details. There are a range of tutorials to help you to get to grips with Pubmed.

Electives (Nursing) - no change in library loan rules

If you are embarking on an elective in the next few weeks, to ensure you do not incur any fines it is advisable to return your books to the library before starting your placement. Students are welcome to continue to borrow items, but please be aware that normal requirements to renew items, and the possibility that items will be recalled or fines incurred for late return/renewal, will still apply.

Error accessing Journal Articles from Medline with FullText

We are aware that users have experienced problems accessing journal articles from Medline with FullText when trying to click on volumes / issues from the journal title page . For some reason when you click on the years of the journal you are not being given a drop-down list of the volumes / issues. Example of journal page in Medline with Fulltext; there is an error when trying to click the year link for the volumes and issues If you search for the article title within Medline with fulltext you should get through to the article full-text. To do this, click on the “New Search” link in the top left-hand corner, copy your article title into the search box and click “Search”. Your article should appear in the search results. (Remember to check that we have the holdings for the issue you need). We have reported the problem to our providers and hope to have it resolved soon. Apologies for the inconvenience caused.

Reminder of IT systems downtime on Saturday 3rd August

Please be aware that IT Services are planning some testing of emergency procedures on Saturday 3rd August between 09:00 and 16:00. As a result there may be very little or no access to Keele IT facilties, printing and photocopying during Saturday. Most of the library systems will also be affected at some point during the day, including the library catalogue and self-service machines. Library print holdings, NHS PCs and associated printer will still be available; and checkouts and returns can be placed at the library counter, instead of the self-issue machine. Are you a new student starting at Keele University this year?

If you are a new nursing or midwifery student starting at Keele University we’d like to welcome you to the Health Library . We are a specialist health library and are partnered with the NHS. How can we help you? We’re conveniently located at the Clinical Education Centre; you’ll notice our main doors as soon as you walk into the atrium.  You don’t need to complete any forms to join – your Keele card acts as your library card and you are added automatically to our library system. Here you can find lots of resources to search for the information you need for your studies. Don’t worry, we have lots of help so that you can get to grips with everything. You’ll also be able to study in the rotunda, use the printing & photocopying facilities and access the nearby computer suite.
