According to the Stress Management Society (SMS), Stress Awareness Month has been held every April, since 1992 to increase public awareness about both the causes and cures for our modern stress epidemic. Despite this running for 29 years we have got a long way to go. According to the Mental health Foundation 74% of UK adults have felt so stressed at some point over the last year they felt overwhelmed or unable to cope. A survey recently conducted by the SMS in partnership with  Huawei AppGallery, identified that 65% of people in the UK have felt more stressed since the COVID-19 restrictions began in March 2020.  The three key causes for concern are feelings of disconnection, uncertainty, and a worrying loss of control. One campaign running this year is ‘The 30 Day Challenge’ encourages you to pick one action each for your Physical, Mental and Emotional Wellbeing to carry out every day.  The Health Library will be closed Monday May 3rd for the Bank Holiday. Remember that online resources will still be available via the website .

If you are embarking on your final placement during April / May: You are welcome to continue to loan items from the library, but please be aware that normal loan periods will still apply. Items may be requested by another user and thus need to be returned. Late return of requested items will still incur fines. Automatic renewals will run as normal, but if you wish to try to avoid having an item potentially due for return at a time when you really cannot come in, you can attempt to renew your books early via your account on Library Search. Also all library books must be returned and any outstanding fines settled before the end of your course. Loans will not extend beyond the course end date/graduation.

   NHS library cards for the Health Library all have an expiry date set. NHS staff will be contacted before your card expires asking you whether you wish to renew and continue your membership.  Please make sure that you respond to ensure that your membership continues. You'll be asked to check the details we have are correct - please let us know of any changes to ensure that you are still eligible for membership. If you have any queries about your membership you can email the library at health.library@keele.ac.uk - make sure you include your library card number if possible.

*Update* Walk-in access to the NHS PCs at the Health Library (Royal Stoke) will now be available throughout Tuesday 13th April, as normal. Walk-in access to Keele PCs also available. Health Library at County also have NHS PCs available to use on walk-in access basis. 

For Tuesday 13th April only, the NHS PCs in the Health Library (Royal Stoke) will not be available for walk-in access between 9 am - 5 pm. After this time walk-in access should be able to resume. Apologies for any inconvenience this causes. However NHS PC walk-in access will be available throughout the day at the Health Library at County.

There are over 130 titles all together, including: Emergencies in... series Oxford Handbooks in Nursing Oxford Medical Handbooks Oxford Textbooks in... series Oxford Textbook of Medicine These are authoritative texts which include key information, guidance and recommendations on a wide range of specialties. Now available online so you don't have to wait in line for a print version. To access: All these titles are available to NHS staff via your NHS OpenAthens username.   Brain tumours are indiscriminate; they can affect anyone at any age. What’s more, they kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer. A brain tumour is a growth of cells in the brain that multiplies in an abnormal, uncontrollable way. Brain tumours are graded according to how fast they grow and how likely they are to grow back after treatment. Grade 1 and 2 tumours are low grade, and grade 3 and 4 tumours are high grade. The UK Brain Tumour Awareness Month campaign in March was founded by Member Charities of Brain Tumour Research in 2004 in order to raise vital awareness of the chronic lack of funding, to influence key decision makers and to challenge UK Governments and larger cancer charities to invest more nationally in order to sustain the vital long-term research that’s so desperately needed.  You can now book a 1-to-1 training session with a librarian from our training team.  Training sessions are being delivered online via MS Teams, although you don't need to be an MS Teams member to join. You will be sent an invite and link to use to access the online session.
