Some of you may have received an email from libhelp@keele purporting to be from the Library talking about a new library system and asking you to activate a new library account. Please DO NOT click on this - it is a scam and the link actually goes to a server in Iran which has nothing to do with Keele University, Campus Library or the Health Library. For those of you who might be away from campus during the holiday period, here is a reminder of how to access our eresources: To check or renew your books Most books should have a return date for after the Xmas holidays. If you do need to renew your loans or you want to check your account then you can do so online via the catalogue . You will need to enter your Keele computer username and password. To read an ebook We have many online ebooks including some popular reading-list texts. Just search the catalogue for the title you are looking for and click the appropriate login link. You can get more help on using ebooks from our Using eBooks etutorial . To access our databases to search for articles Use the links to the databases on your subject page: medicine , midwifery or nursing . These links take you directly to the correct login screen. We are led to believe that the problems users have been experiencing over the past week, trying to access NHS Athens resources, have now been resolved. If you have any problems accessing our online resources please report it via the technical support form or contact Cheryl , the eresources librarian.

There appear to be on-going problems accessing NHS-subscribed resources using NHS Athens usernames / passwords. Access seems to be patchy and is affecting access to databases, ejournals and ebooks. We have informed both NICE (main supplier of databases) and Eduserv / Athens. Please report any problems that you are having so that we can escalate the issue.

If you are a researcher either at Keele University or with one of our NHS partners we can support you in a number of ways. We have now added a list of research funding organisations to our researchers page .

The Athens systems will be undergoing maintenance on the 5th and 10th December between 7 and 9 am. This may affect users ability to access ebooks, ejournals and databases at that time.

Here is a resource to help your patients. It is a library of mobile apps that are aimed at patients and have been reviewed by the NHS to ensure that they are clinically safe. There are official NHS apps as well as apps developed by external providers. Some are free, others need to be paid for. Many of the apps also include a rating. We have received the following notification regarding expected maintenance to Wiley Online and the Cochrane Library: Event Title: Wiley Online Library Release & The Cochrane Library Scheduled Maintenance Downtime December 2013 Date : Saturday 7th December 2013 Time:  10:00 am UK Duration: 5 hours (approximate). How it will effect users: The Cochrane Home page will be available but reviews and search functionality will be unavailable. NICE Evidence Search is a healthcare specialist search engine. It will allow you to search across a wide range of accredited resources that have been approved by NICE Evidence. Thus you can be confident that the results you find will be of good quality. The results screen includes topic guides, if available, as well as your search results. You can also use the filters to focus your results more. Filters include: Area of interest Types of information Type of Clinical Query Sources Medicines & Devices Published Date Screen-shot of results from a simple search The results will often link to the full-text. This search engine does not search across journals for primary research. You can find out how to use NICE Evidence Search by watching our short video .

Medicines Complete have updated their home page and login screen. Google Scholar is an online search engine that limits its search to scholarly literature that is in the public domain. It searches across a wide range of subject areas. You can reach the advanced search options by clicking the down arrow on the search box. The advanced options allow you to include limits for an author, journal and date range as well as allowing you to include combinations of search terms. Google scholar is helpful for trying to find particular articles where you don’t have the complete reference and for searching for open access articles. However remember to check our journal A-Z lists to see whether we have a subscription for the full-text and which collection it will be available in.
