Eating Disorders Awareness Week is an international awareness event, fighting the myths and misunderstandings that surround eating disorders. This year, Beat’s (Beating Eating Disorders) Eating Disorders Awareness Week activities will focus on early intervention, a key part of Beat’s work – the earlier someone can enter treatment for an eating disorder, the greater their chance of recovery. Taking the first step towards recovery is often a difficult one. Beat want to ensure that people have the support they need to take that step, and get the care they deserve when they do. So throughout Eating Disorders Awareness Week and beyond, Beat’s aim is to educate both healthcare professionals and the wider public about eating disorders so that they’re equipped to help if a patient or someone they know is suffering. The Health Library can help you in many different ways. Here is an example from our NHS Outreach Service. Activity: Research was carried out to find information on transgender specific services for children and young people, in terms of the prevalence of transgender issues and referrals to mental health services, as well as guidance and pathways from existing services in other organisations. A systematic literature search using a wide variety of search terms was carried out on PsychInfo, further searching over six other databases and an advanced internet search. The results were collated into two reports covering prevalence and “service issues” which contained full text access to the relevant documents wherever possible. You can access comprehensive medicine and drug information online. Medicines Complete gives you online access to a wide range of specialist drug reference ebooks, including: the BNF & BNFc Handbook on Injectable Drugs Herbal Medicines Martindale: the complete drug reference Stockley’s Drug Interactions Kucers The Use of Antibiotics And others You can browse the individual titles or search across all publications. You can log in either via: Your Keele computer username / password Your NHS Athens username / password The list of ebooks available to you will depend on the organisation you belong to. Want to know whether you have access to an article full-text? If you work for the NHS then you can check our NHS Journals A-Z list . You will need to log in using your NHS Athens username / password. Then you can search for the Journal Title you need. You will need to check: Do the holdings cover the year / issue you are looking for Which database or platform do you need to click to access the title See the example below: The journal title “The Lancet” is available to UHNM users from a number of databases. Activity: A literature search was carried out to find information on the topic of repeat child protection  proceedings. A scoping search was performed to gather search terms. These were used to  systematically search across five databases. The citations of the documents were also hand searched  in order to locate further documents. The results were collated into a report which contained full  text access to the relevant documents, wherever possible. Purpose: To support and inform the development of local programmes through the gathering of information  on existing initiatives.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. Every year, 1 in 4 deaths are caused by heart disease. Heart disease can often be prevented when people make healthy choices and manage their health conditions. Communities, health professionals, and families can work together to create opportunities for people to make healthier choices. Make a difference in your community: Spread the word about strategies for preventing heart disease and encourage people to live heart healthy lives. We can use this month to raise awareness about heart disease and how people can prevent it: ·        Encourage families to make small changes, like using spices to season their food instead of salt. ·        Motivate teachers and administrators to make physical activity a part of the school day. If you are embarking on a placement or elective during Semester 2: You are welcome to continue to loan items from the library, but please be aware that normal loan periods will still apply. Items may be requested by another user and recalled. Late return of requested items will still incur fines. Automatic renewals will run as normal, but if you wish to try to avoid having an item potentially due for return at a time when you really cannot come in, you can attempt to renew your books early via you account on Library Search.

You’ll find help in getting access, how to search and accessing full-text. eTutorials are available for our most popular online resources, both Keele and NHS. Most are very short; you can jump to the section you need and some include video demonstrations. You can learn more about what the Health Library has to offer you from our online tours . All our etutorials allow you to download and save our etutorial reflection document which you can add to your portfolio.

Learn how to complete a literature search by completing our Information Skills etutorials . Our Information Skills etutorials are short, interactive tutorials that help you to develop the skills you need to find information effectively. Start with an Introduction to Literature Searching – complete the starter search plan for your project or assignment. Then go on and complete more etutorials to improve your search skills . You can complete and save our etutorial reflection document to keep a record for your eportfolio.

Printing services are now back up and running in the IT Suite (CEC).

Customers will not be able to print from the Keele University PCs, due to an IT systems upgrade on Saturday 21st January. We anticipate printing services will resume later on Saturday, once IT confirm that the update is complete. In the meantime: if you need to print – save items to a memory stick and bring it to the library counter.  Library staff will print the items and take payment at the till.

Looking for unusual patient cases? Then you can search BMJ Case Reports and read the full-text. Want to share an unusual case? Then you can submit your own BMJ Case Report. BMJ Case Reports are available to UHNM staff. You can view the full-text by logging in with your NHS Athens username. Dry January is Alcohol Concern's flagship campaign. The campaign is a chance to ditch the hangover, reduce the waistline, and save money by giving up alcohol for 31 days.  Instead of talking about what fun (or not) you might have drinking, this sparks off lots of different conversations about the benefits of having a break from drinking. These are the sort of conversations that Alcohol Concern wants to have with people. In January 2014 according to Alcohol Concern, over 17,000 Britons stopped drinking for that month. While there is controversy as to the efficacy and benefits of the practice, a 2014 survey by the University of Sussex found that six months following January 2014, out of 900 surveyed participants in the custom, 72% had "kept harmful drinking episodes down" and 4% were still not drinking.
