New at UHNM – here’s how the Health Library can help

If you are just starting a new position at UHNM, we’d like to tell you how the library service can help you in your work.

Coronavirus / Covid-19 Restrictions

At the time of writing this blog post the library service is still operating under coronavirus / covid-19 restrictions. The building is currently closed. This means that many of our services are now operating remotely online. You can find more information about the restrictions by checking the section Access to Health Library services and resources due to restrictions related to covid-19 on our home page.

However, you can still access many services and resources without visiting the library.

Register for Your OpenAthens Username

Your OpenAthens username will give you access to NHS-subscribed resources including ebooks, journals and databases. You can register for your username online:
You must use your NHS-based email address in order to be verified immediately. If you don’t you will have to wait for your account to be assessed and approved.
You can find more help about NHS OpenAthens accounts from the Athens page on our website.

Key Resources you’ll need

The NHS and Health Library subscribe to many resources on your behalf. You can access many resources online – you’ll need your NHS OpenAthens username.

eBooks
You can search our library catalogue Library Search for ebooks. The titles that are purchased in cooperation with our university partner can be found here. We also have ebooks collections from other sources, including Clinical Key ebooks and a collection of Oxford handbooks online.

Clinical decision support tools
You can access a number of decision support tools that can help you as you get to grips with your clinical specialty. These tools offer help in background evidence, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of a wide range of diseases and conditions:
BMJ Best Practice :: Clinical Key :: Dynamed
These tools are also available as mobile apps so you can access information on the go.

Full-text access to articles
When you need the full-text of an article, the first place to start your search is via the Journal collections. All our NHS-subscribed journals are on the NHS journals A-Z list – log in and search for the journal title you need. You’ll be able to find out whether we subscribe to the journal, which holdings are covered and where you can access the full-text. Note that we don’t always buy a journal direct from the publisher so you may find the full-text within a database or on a different platform.

Literature searching
When you need to complete your own literature search on a topic or for a patient case, you will need to access our healthcare-specific databases. HDAS (healthcare databases advanced search) will offer you a single search interface so that you can search our NHS-subscribed databases: AMED, BNI, CINAHL, Embase, Emcare, HMIC, Medline, PsychInfo and Pubmed.

Requesting a Literature Search

If you can’t find the information you need or don’t have the time to complete your own literature search then make the most of your library services and request a literature search. Our staff are experienced searchers with a wealth of knowledge and experience of using specialist healthcare resources.

Training and Developing Your Skills

Although our training programme held at the Health Library has been impacted by the coronavirus / covid-19 restrictions, we do still have some online options:

NHS resources are changing from the 30th June 2025

A range of our resources for NHS customers are purchased by NHS England as a national Core Content offering. At the end of June 2025, the content of the core collection is changing.  You may find some resources are no longer available to you. Specifically affected are the Oxford Handbooks e-books and access to a range of ProQuest databases.   Oxford Handbooks: Some Oxford Handbooks are being replaced by locally purchased e-book access. We also have a range of Oxford Handbooks available in print from the health libraries. To find our local resources - in the NHS Knowledge and Libraries Hub search for Oxford Handbook. Then select the limiter 'Library Catalogue only'. Limiters are located on the left hand side of the screen. Both local e-books and print books will then show in the results. The Knowledge and Library Hub can be accessed via this link NHS Knowledge and Libraries Hub or by clicking on the Knowledge and Libraries Hub icon on the desktop on a UHNM com...

Protect your searches, alerts and articles/references ahead of change to NHS Knowledge and Library Hub.

In early July the interface for the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub will have a new look and functionality; using EBSCO’s new user interface. Ahead of the change we have been alerted that if users have created search alerts saved searches in customer folders saved bibliographic details of items they need to take steps to help their information carry over to the new system. Take these steps now to be ready for the change. It is advisable to do this before 1 st July.   1)    Search Alerts Search alerts will not carryover to the new system. Instead – users are advised to find their alert and save it as a saved search instead. Once the new interface is live, the search can be re-run and users should be able to set up a new alert. How do I save my search alert as a saved search instead? Go to the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub and sign in with your NHS OpenAthens account. Click on ‘Folder’ in the blue section at the top of the screen You will be ...

Nursing final year placements - loaning items

If the next few weeks you are embarking on your final placement before graduating: You are welcome to continue to loan items from the library, but please be aware that normal loan periods will still apply. Items may be requested by another user and recalled. Late return of requested items will still incur fines. Automatic renewals will run as normal, but if you wish to try to avoid having an item potentially due for return at a time when you really cannot come in, you can attempt to renew your books early via you account on Library Search. All items must be returned and any outstanding fines paid before you graduate.
