Health Library News

As part of the ongoing improvements, the National Library for Health (NLH) has reorganised and improved the search capacity on the health related RSS feed directory . The directory can now be used to search for latest news articles posted within the last 90 days, or for RSS feeds to receive news updates on your areas of interest. The RSS directory is available free to all. Simply view the feed, then cut and paste into an RSS reader e.g. Bloglines or Google reader . If you hold an NHS Athens account, then by logging into the NLH website, you can update the feeds directly into My Updates or My Links sections of My Library to receive regular current awareness updates. From the 8th January, there have been some changes to e-journals subscriptions available through Science Direct. Discrepancies in the Library A-Z journal listings may exist temporarily - automatic updating will occur only once the first issue of the journal has been published. New additions to the list include titles such as: Anaesthesia & Intensive Care Medicine Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport Journal of the American College of Surgeons Journal of Tissue Viability Psychiatry Surgery (Oxford) The American Journal of Cardiology The Foundation Years Titles no longer available include: American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology American Journal of Hypertension AORN Cardiovascular Research Current Problems in Diagnostic Radiology Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Journal of the American College of Radiology Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association Seminars in Radiation Oncology Articles may still be obtained through the inter-library loan service. Due to restructuring of the National Library for Health website, no service will be available Monday 14th January between approximately 5-6.30pm. Full service is hoped to be restored later on that evening. The website is currently undergoing a number of staged changes running through to April of this year, with several such maintainence sessions planned. Library held training sessions will be revised in April once all changes have been implemented. Wiserwiki ( http://www.wiserwiki.com ) is a new medical wiki provided by the publishing giants Elsevier . The original content is based on “ Textbook of Primary Care Medicine ” (3rd Edition) by John Noble. To promote credibility and maintain standards, the wiki content can only be edited by a board of certified professionals. Site users can engage in topic discussion, provide comment and suggestions. To help support the University Faculty of Health open days, the Health Library and IT suite will be open from 12.30pm to 3.30pm Sundays 24th February & 9th March.

Aspiring to excellence, the final report of the independent inquiry into modernising medical careers is now available from the modernising medical careers website. Sir John Tooke calls for the creation of a new over-seeing body to standardise training and act as an interface between policy development and implementation. The report highlights eight areas of concern where action is required.

Harvard- MITOpenCourseware offers free course materials for a wide selection of their subjects incuding health science and technology . Over 1800 courses have been made available should you want to dip into to other topics. Visitng the website can provide you with free downloads of the lecture notes, presentations, reading lists and assignments.

2008 will see a great number of changes to the NHS electronic resources. The first of the changes to be introduced is the national purchase of the American Medical Association journals . This will provide Athens authenticated access to journals such as JAMA, Archives of Neurology and Archives of Ophthlmology. Unlike Proquest titles, there will be no embargo to accessing the articles and provides stable full text access to past issues. MyJournals (TDNet) provides an A-Z list of journals available electronically to NHS staff. The list can be used to set table of content alerts as they become available. Adding alerts through MyJournals will also add the journal title to My Favourite Journals (accessible via NHS Athens login via the National Library for Health ). This list will allow you to quickly browse all the issues of your favourite journals from one page. The service will shortly be available where by you can select the RSS icon or 'add to MyLibrary' to add the table of content feed direct to My Update section of My Library . Please contact the library for further information of accessing electronic journals or keeping up to date using RSS feeds.

The National Library for Health's Clinical Knowledge Summaries (CKS) provide evidence based summaries and patient information on selected conditions. New changes to the search interface for the National Library for Health (NLH), have now resulted in new search hubs being developed. By selecting the group title for Evidence Based Reviews or Guidance you will now find it easier to search more resources at once. Further developments on linking health information and searching the NLH will continue through to April next year.

Attention all Keele Students! Currently there is a problem with accessing journals through the Ebsco A-Z list. We are working to resolve this issue as soon as possible. All journals should still be accessible by logging into MyAthens ( http:// auth.athensams.net/my/ ) and checking under the journal provider. Most University journal subscriptions will be located under Science Direct and Blackwell Synergy . Please contact the library if you have any queries or problems.

This months updates include Infertility , Lacerations , Meniere's disease , Otitis externa and Palliative cancer care — nausea & vomit . If you can’t find the condition you are searching for why not try searching DynaMed for additional resources.

Lord Darzi has recently published his interim report 'Our NHS, Our Future.' The review of the NHS is aimed at delivering better patient services including the reduction of waiting times and focus on improving outcomes in cancer and cardiovascular disease. Web of Science has now introduced a web-based version of the reference management package EndNote. This is accessible only to those with a Keele University Athens account. Current library-based courses will still focus around the Reference Manager service. Full training time table & online booking form is available from the Health Library website .

Currently there is a nationwide problem with the adminstration of NHS Athens accounts. The adminstration site has been taken off line until all issues have been resolved. As a result any new accounts, reset passwords or account extensions created from the 25th Sept onwards may be lost. Please contact the library if you have any problems.

Hello and welcome, to all new and returning students. To help your orientation of the Health Library, we have compiled a short induction video available through the Library section of WebCT. This 7 minute induction is designed to give you the basic information regarding joining the Library, getting started with computers, and where to go for help. This has been designed as a quick overview and reference tool to compliment the Library induction session as part of your teaching programme.
